St. Chavara Kuriakose Elias was a visionary saint, educator, philosopher, and social reformer whose life was dedicated to serving humanity through education and spiritual upliftment. As the founder of the Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI), the first indigenous religious congregation in India, he laid a strong organizational and spiritual foundation that later gave rise to institutions like Amala Institute of Medical Sciences. Rev. Fr. Gabriel Chiramel, honoured with the Padma Bhushan for his outstanding service, was a respected priest, zoologist, author, educationist, institution builder, and social reformer. His inventive leadership led to the inception of Amala Cancer Hospital in Thrissur in 1978, which later grew into the comprehensive Amala Institute of Medical Sciences. Under his guidance, Amala expanded from a specialized cancer care centre to a multidisciplinary healthcare and medical education institution.
